Doors open at Bristol STW

On Saturday 9th September, GENeco opened up one of the biggest sewage treatment works in Europe to the public.

Bristol sewage treatment works was one of 120 venues across the city participating in Bristol Doors Open Day.

Over 380 people attended the sewage treatment works over the course of the day. The visitors were given the chance to see what happens to their household sewage and food waste, and how it is converted into renewable energy and biofertiliser.

Two wind turbines owned and operated by Thrive Renewables were open to the public on an adjacent site, allowing those who attended to learn about a different type of renewable electricity generation.

Amy Clephane, bioresources adviser, helped lead the site tours on the day and said: “It was super to share what happens here with the local community. The public were very interested and asked a lot of great questions.”

Bob Porter, GENeco’s Operations and Maintenance Manager, said: “The day was a great success and I would like to thank all the Wessex Water and GENeco staff for their hard work and contributions towards its smooth running.”
