A joint record high number of entrants saw representative teams including WRAP, Suez, Veolia, Biffa and Grundon all vying for national glory at Brackley Leisure Centre near Northampton.

The morning began with randomly drawn groups to decide seedings for the afternoon’s knockout competition. GENeco didn’t let any travel induced fatigue show as they raced into a 3-0 lead against tournament hosts EMG Media.

With the games coming thick and fast, GENeco struggled to produce a consistency of performance, finally finishing the group stages in third with two wins and two losses to their name.

The second half was a cagey affair with chances few and far between, with both teams reluctant to go for the win for fear of conceding. The teams were finally split on sudden death penalties, with GENeco’s conquerors later going on to win in the final.

Andrew Hepburn scored the pick of the day’s goals with a low curling effort that nestled into the far corner from distance, but the whole team acquitted themselves very well and it is something that will definitely be getting pencilled into the 2019 diary.
